STAIRCASES
These images are from my photographic explorations in Hong Kong between 2015 and 2023, and part of a larger series. Each staircase holds its own story, and sometimes a combination of multiple stories carried by the people climbing these stairs to go to their homes or to work, or to a commercial place, or even to a non commercial place, like a buddhist association. I like the way I can collect them and see how they help me to explore Hong Kong from its hidden chore, its very inside secrets. Hong Kong is a complex city, very intricate and busy, the old staircases nestled in the heart of the disappearing low rise buildings, are like tunnels filled with memories, holding various iconic aesthetics like pastel colours used to paint the social housing walls, the tiles, and of course the chinese characters.

My 3D photo collage technic aims to emphasise the tunnel-like visual experience we have when we look at these pictures. The stairs embody different allegories we can easily perceive, like the difficult steps we often have to climb to achieve our goals, the hope shed by the light at the end of the corridor, the helpful rail we may grip in case of trouble. Every visitor is invited to imagine his, her own interpretation.
